“I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.” (Psalm 3:5 ESV)

We take a lot of things for granted because we are used to receiving them without making any effort. One of those is the special blessing of lying down, sleeping and waking. They are three separate activities that can go wrong at any time.

The Psalmist stated that, “I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.”

The allusion here is, the reason why we are able to lie down, sleep in peace and rise up in safety is, “The Lord sustained me.” Now, take a deep breath and imagine how God has faithfully sustained you for the whole of last year alone.

I suppose our heartfelt song today should be:

Call: I lie down and sleep, and all night long, I wake up normally because

All: The LORD sustained me.

Call: In the time of terrifying dreams,

All: The LORD sustained me.

Call: Despite the evil arrows and the pestilence that walk in darkness,

All: The LORD sustained me.

In the times of faith and fear

All: The LORD sustained me.

Call: In the face of seen and unseen battles,

All: The LORD sustained me.

Beloved, even if you want to focus on lying, sleeping and waking up alone for the past 365 days, discountenancing your siestas, The LORD has sustained you for more than 1,095 times! Therefore, on a special day as this, if the Psalmist’s expression resonates with you, let all make a loud declaration without hesitation that “THE LORD SUSTAINED ME.”
